AI systems can misrepresent, fabricate, compress, or distort. That is not hypothetical.

In 2024, WIRED reported on a lawsuit against Perplexity in which Dow Jones and the New York Post alleged the system hallucinated fake news content and falsely attributed it to real publishers. In 2025, Reuters reported that OpenAI prevailed in a defamation case brought by a radio host after ChatGPT fabricated allegations and a fictional lawsuit about him.
